What Are Output Styles?

Output styles determine how your references will look when exported to footnotes, bibliographies or lists. Common output styles are MLA, Chicago Manual of Style, APA, etc. EndNote has templates for these and many other styles required by scholarly journals. You can also customize existing styles, or create your own. The EndNote X2 User's Guide (pdf) included with your EndNote installation, provides complete instructions on how to do this.

For examples of references in MLA, APA or Chicago, see the NYU Libraries Citation Style Guide

Using Cite While You Write

EndNote's Cite While You Write (CWYW) feature inserts EndNote commands into Micosoft Word. Use CWYW tools to create footnotes, in-text references and bibliographies from your EndNote Library. CWYW tools are available for MS Word X, 2004, or 2008 (Mac) and MS Word 2003 or 2007 (Windows).

If you use a different word processor or an older version of Word, you can use EndNote's Format Paper process. Format Paper works on any document that can be saved as RTF (rich text format) or .ODT (OpenOffice format). Complete details on using Format Paper are found in the EndNote X2 User's Guide pdf installed with EndNote.
